Charles Reeves - Seaman Patrol Service Ramsgate 1917

Postby Fliss on Mar 10th, '10, 22:45

Can anyone one help me to trace my Great Granddad Charles Reeves. I have a copy of my Granddad's Birth Certificate and it stats that in Dec 1917 he was a Seaman - Patrol Service in Ramsgate. I know that vessels were used from Ramsgate to operate Mine Sweeping exercises in the Channel. I do not know what ship he was on or even where I would get that information!

Any help would be so gratefully received.

Thanks

If you go to the National Archives page Rob suggested, you'll notice a few results for a Charles Reeves in
Registers of Seamen's Services
you may be able to narrow these down by looking at his place of birth from the certificate.

There's one result for a Reeves, (Frederick Charles) in
Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve: Records of Service, WW1
Name Reeves, Frederick Charles
Service Number: Z/5116
RNVR Division: Mersey

However you will notice the division is not in the London area?

I would also recommend posting an enquiry on the Great War forum at http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/

Keep us posted on what you can find

Hi,

Thank you Rob, I have looked on the National Archives site but as I do not know yet where he was born I can't tell which one would be correct. Once I received the death certificate I will check again.

I have now registered on the Great War forum as advised and will post the same message there and see what happens.

Thank you so much for your help.
